- Wayfinding & environment
The leadership team knew what they wanted the school to stand for. The challenge was shaping that into something visible and consistent.
Barrowford Primary had grown in confidence and ambition. There was a strong sense of culture, expectation and aspiration, but it hadn’t yet been clearly defined or expressed as a cohesive brand. The values lived in conversations and day-to-day practice, rather than in the environment itself.
As a result, the building didn’t reflect the clarity the leadership team felt internally. There was no unifying narrative running through the school, and no shared visual language reinforcing what it meant to belong there.
In a primary setting, that gap matters. These are formative years, where belonging takes shape and expectations become instinctive. If the environment isn’t reinforcing what the school stands for, it’s a missed opportunity.
This wasn’t about updating walls. It was about defining identity, shaping values and ensuring they were consistently expressed across the school.
We started by helping the leadership team articulate what had previously lived in instinct and conversation.
Through collaborative sessions, we clarified the school’s core values and the behaviours they wanted to see reinforced every day. Aspiration, respect, achievement and community weren’t new ideas, but they needed structure, language and definition. From there, we shaped a clear brand narrative that reflected the school’s ambition and gave it a confident voice.
Only then did we turn to the environment.
Instead of asking what should go on the walls, we asked what pupils should feel as they moved through the building. What should be immediately clear? What messages should quietly reinforce expectations without constant explanation?
The visual language was designed to be simple, purposeful and age-appropriate. Every intervention was placed with intent, particularly at key transition points, including corridors, shared spaces and the moments between lessons where culture is either reinforced or lost.
Gradually, the school’s identity moved from being understood internally to being experienced throughout the building.
What began as a need for greater clarity became a defining moment for the school. By shaping its values into a clear brand and embedding them throughout the environment, Barrowford Primary now presents a confident and cohesive identity.
The school communicates a consistent and assured sense of purpose. Pupils, staff and parents experience a joined-up story that reflects the school’s ambition, rather than an unspoken set of intentions.
Staff and pupils now have a stronger foundation for reinforcing expectations because the environment actively supports them. Values aren’t abstract ideas; they’re embedded into daily movement through the building.
The result is a school that feels more aspirational and aligned, strengthening community connection and creating a space pupils feel proud to belong to. Culture isn’t built through assemblies alone. The environment now reinforces it in the moments between them.
